Apple is already deep into development of iOS 19, the next major version of its mobile operating system, with the first beta expected later this year. While the official release is still months away, plenty of leaks and insider reports are hinting at exciting changes. From a redesigned Camera app to improvements in Siri, Apple is set to refine and enhance the iPhone experience in new ways.

Each iOS update brings something new, like features, design changes, and speed improvements. iOS 19 will probably build on iOS 18, adding more AI stuff, making Siri smarter, and improving the apps we already use. There's even been talk about a new home screen look, kind of like what they did with visionOS, which could make iPhones look super modern.

Like usual, Apple will show off iOS 19 at WWDC 2025. Developers will get the test version soon after that. Then, everyone else will get a chance to try it out before it officially launches with the iPhone 17. In the meantime, here's what we know so far about iOS 19.

The New iOS 19 Features

iOS 19 Codenamed "Luck"

iOS 19 is being developed alongside macOS 16 (Cheer), watchOS 12 (Nepali), and visionOS 3 (Discovery). While we can expect a redesigned Camera app and an improved Siri, there are other potential changes on the way. Apple Intelligence, first introduced in iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, is expected to see more updates. This AI feature powers app interactions and Siri improvements, helping make your device smarter.

So, When Will iOS 19 Actually Come Out?

Apple follows a predictable pattern when it comes to software releases. The Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is where we get our first look at new iOS updates, and the first developer betas are released shortly after the conference.

  • WWDC 2025: Likely to begin on Monday, June 9. Expect the developer beta to drop around this time.

  • Public Beta: Typically comes 4–6 weeks after the developer beta. Based on past releases, we can expect iOS 19’s public beta to debut in mid-July 2025.

Past iOS Release Dates:

  • iOS 18: Developer beta released on June 10, 2024. Public beta followed on July 15, with the final version on September 16, 2024.

  • iOS 17: Developer beta launched on June 5, 2023. Public beta on July 12, final release on September 18, 2023.

  • iOS 16: Developer beta on June 6, 2022. Public beta on July 11, official release on September 12, 2022.

  • iOS 15: Developer beta on June 7, 2021. Public beta on June 30, official release on September 20, 2021.

The final, stable release of iOS 19 is expected to coincide with the launch of the iPhone 17 in September 2025.

Compatibility: Which Devices Will Support iOS 19?

Good news for iPhone users! iOS 19 will likely be compatible with the same devices that can run iOS 18. This means older devices, such as the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, will still be able to support the new software.

Expected Compatible Devices:

  • iPhone 16 Series (2024): iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16

  • iPhone 15 Series (2023): iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15

  • iPhone 14 Series (2022): iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14

  • iPhone SE (3rd Gen, 2022)

  • iPhone 13 Series (2021): iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13

  • iPhone 12 Series (2020): iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12

  • iPhone SE (2nd Gen, 2020)

  • iPhone 11 Series (2019): iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11

  • iPhone XR, XS, XS Max (2018)

A Smarter Siri: Meet LLM Siri

Apple is working on a new version of Siri, dubbed "LLM Siri," which will use advanced large language models (LLMs) to provide more natural responses and better handle complex requests. This will make Siri more conversational and capable of holding ongoing chats, similar to AI chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.

Apple Intelligence is already laying the groundwork for LLM Siri by using an initial Apple LLM to assess whether Siri can handle a request or if a more advanced model is needed. Eventually, this new version will replace the current Siri completely. LLM Siri is expected to be previewed at WWDC 2025, with a testing version launching in 2026.

The Redesigned Camera App

The Camera app in iOS 19 is getting a major overhaul, with design cues taken from visionOS, the interface for the Apple Vision Pro headset. The new app will feature translucent menus, offering a futuristic and cleaner design.

Shooting Modes and Adjustments Menu

The shooting modes and adjustments menu will now be combined into one Photo/Video button. Tap Photo to access Portrait, Spatial, and Pano modes, as well as Style, Aspect, Exposure, and Timer adjustments.

Tap Video to access Depth, Spatial, Slo-Mo, and Time-Lapse modes, as well as Action and Exposure adjustments. A new translucent panel will appear at the top, where you can set resolution and frame rate.

This redesign will also make better use of the screen, offering a cleaner aesthetic and a larger, more visible viewfinder compared to the current iOS 18 version.

A Possible New Look for the Home Screen

Prosser suggests that this visionOS-inspired design could extend beyond the Camera app and impact other parts of iOS, including app icons and widgets on the Home Screen. However, it's more likely that we will only see the visionOS-style design in a few core Apple apps, with a full-blown update coming later.

Apple Intelligence Updates

Though there aren’t any specific rumors about Apple Intelligence updates in iOS 19, it’s likely that we’ll see new features and improvements. One possible update could be custom playlist covers in the Music app, a feature Apple teased but didn’t release in iOS 18.3.

A Longer Rollout of New Features

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg predicts that many of the exciting features in iOS 19 may not be available right away. Instead, Apple could reserve the most significant updates for later iOS releases like iOS 19.1, 19.2, 19.3, and 19.4. This pattern is consistent with past iOS releases, where features like onscreen awareness, new app actions, and more were rolled out months after the initial release.

That’s the scoop on iOS 19 so far. Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the official release!
