Will iPhones Cost More Because of Trump's Tariffs on China? Here's What You Need to Know

Apple iPhone

Lots of popular tech products like iPhones, laptops, tablets, and smartwatches could become more expensive in the United States. That’s because the government is planning to add a big new tax—called a tariff—on items made in China. This new rule would make companies pay 125% more to bring products from China to the U.S.

Since many iPhones are made in China, making them will cost Apple a lot more money. Experts say if Apple passes those extra costs to shoppers, iPhones could end up costing hundreds of dollars more.

Where Are iPhones Made?

Even though Apple is an American company, most iPhones sold in the U.S. are actually made in other countries. Almost 80% of them come from China, and about 20% are made in India.

Apple is trying to depend less on Chinese factories, so they’ve started making more iPhones in India and Vietnam. These countries are becoming more important for iPhone production.

Because of the new taxes, Apple is now moving even faster. Reports say they’ve already sent over 600 tons of iPhones from India to the U.S. using special planes.

How Hard Is It for Apple to Make iPhones Somewhere Else?

The goal of the new tariff is to get companies to build more things inside the U.S. But that’s not so easy. Big tech companies like Apple have factories and suppliers all around the world. Moving everything to one country, like the U.S., is very expensive and takes a lot of time.

Apple has said it wants to invest $500 billion in the U.S., but moving just 10% of its production could cost $30 billion and take three years. That’s a lot of work, money, and change.

Will iPhones Really Get More Expensive?

So far, Apple hasn’t said if it will raise iPhone prices. But since the company earns good profits, it might cover some of the extra costs—at least for now.

Still, some experts believe Apple might raise prices a little, and people would probably still buy them. Apple has a strong brand and lots of loyal fans, so even if prices go up a bit, most customers might not mind.

If the iPhone 16 Pro Max (256GB) is made in China, the price could jump from $1,199 to $1,999. If it's made in India, the price might only go up a little, from $999 to $1,046.

But if Apple tries to make iPhones in the U.S., the price could reach $3,500 because of the much higher cost of labor and building stuff in America.

What Should You Do If You Want an iPhone?

Since people aren’t sure what’s going to happen, many shoppers in the U.S. are buying iPhones now before prices go up. The real changes will probably show up when Apple releases the next iPhone later this year.

If prices do rise a lot, some people might start looking at cheaper phones like the Google Pixel or Samsung Galaxy, which do many of the same things but cost less.

Others might buy refurbished phones, get older models, or just wait to upgrade until the prices are more stable.
